What: Peaceful protest against genocide denial
After recently commemorating the Holodomor famine-genocide, we become aware of shocking remarks stated by a University of Alberta, Faculty of Education member. The statements denied the existence of the Holodomor as a genocide. Xenophobic and discriminatory remarks were also expressed against the Ukrainian community and former Chancellor of the University of Alberta.
The Ukrainian Students’ Society (USS), along with the support of the Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union (SUSK), the Ukrainian Cananian Congress – Alberta Provincial Council, and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Edmonton Branch are holding a peaceful protest against genocide denial and for the University of Alberta to officially recognize the Holodomor as a genocide. Join us to support our efforts.
Speakers:
Megan Brownlee – President, University of Alberta Ukrainian Students’ Society (USS)
Andriy Prichliak – Internal Relations Director, Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union (SUSK)
Jars Balan – Director, Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies (CIUS), University of Alberta
Orysia Boychuk- President, Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Alberta Provincial Council
Yarko Broda – Vice President, Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Edmonton Branch
Background on the Holodomor:
The Holodomor was a genocidal famine in Ukraine that occurred in 1932-1933 during which millions of men, women, and children were starved to death by the Soviet regime of Joseph Stalin. Holodomor means “death inflicted by starvation” in Ukrainian. The Holodomor is a recognized genocide by the Parliament of Canada and most legislatures in Canada, including Alberta, as well as countless other countries and international government organizations around the world.
